Can NDIS support coordination be done online?

Yes - and for most participants, a lot of it already is, whether they've noticed or not. The real question is when remote coordination works well and when you should insist on someone local.

What coordination actually consists of

Strip support coordination back to its parts and you get: reading documents, researching providers, phone calls, emails, video meetings, and writing reports. Almost none of that requires a coordinator to be physically in your house. When a coordinator works by phone, email and video, your funded hours go into the work itself instead of into a car on Monash Freeway.

Where remote works well

Explaining your plan over a video call with the documents shared on screen. Sending provider shortlists you can read in your own time. Chasing waitlists and billing problems, which happens by phone regardless of where anyone lives. Regular check-ins that fit around work and school. For participants in areas with few local coordinators, or those who prefer written communication, remote is often better, not just acceptable.

Where in-person still earns its place

Some conversations go better at a kitchen table: complex family situations, a participant who communicates best face to face, or a first meeting where trust needs building. A hybrid arrangement - mostly remote, in person when it matters - is a perfectly normal thing to ask for. Any coordinator should be able to tell you clearly which meetings they'd do in person and why.

What it means for your funding

Coordination is billed hourly, and providers can charge travel time within NDIS rules when they attend in person. Remote delivery usually means fewer of your funded hours spent on logistics. It's fair to ask any prospective coordinator how they bill travel and what proportion of their work happens remotely.

Questions to ask a remote coordinator

How quickly do you respond to messages? What happens in an emergency with a provider? Can my family join calls? Can we meet in person if something big comes up? Good answers are specific. Vague ones tell you something too.

Coordination by phone, video or in person

TrueSide delivers support coordination remotely across Melbourne and Victoria, with in-person meetings available around the south-east. Ask us how a hybrid arrangement would work for you.
