Plan-managed vs self-managed Support Coordination
The coordination work can look similar, but invoice flow, price rules and participant administration differ depending on how the relevant funding is managed.
The service role is similar; the payment pathway changes
A Support Coordinator’s core job — helping organise and implement supports — does not become a different profession because the funding is plan-managed or self-managed. What changes is who handles invoices and some of the practical administration around claiming.
Plan-managed Support Coordination
With plan-managed funding, a plan manager handles eligible provider invoices and claims within their role. An unregistered provider can generally work with plan-managed supports where the rules allow. The coordinator still needs a clear service agreement and should invoice accurately against the service provided.
For the participant, plan management can reduce day-to-day invoice administration while retaining access to many unregistered providers.
Self-managed Support Coordination
With self-managed funding, the participant or nominee has more direct responsibility for paying providers and claiming according to NDIS rules. That can provide flexibility, but it also means the participant needs to understand invoices, records and claiming responsibilities.
What about NDIA-managed?
NDIA-managed supports can only be delivered by appropriately registered providers. TrueSide is currently unregistered, so it cannot claim Support Coordination from NDIA-managed funding.
Does plan management affect provider choice?
It can affect which providers are available, especially because NDIA-managed funding requires registered providers. But a Support Coordinator should still help the participant compare suitable options rather than treating management type as a reason to funnel the participant into one preferred provider.
Do the price limits work the same way?
Current NDIS pricing rules need to be checked for the specific support and funding-management arrangement. TrueSide states its Support Coordination rates against the current national price limits and confirms the claiming arrangement in the service agreement. Self-management can have different price flexibility in some contexts, but that should be checked against current official NDIS rules rather than assumed from an old article.
Which is better?
There is no universal answer. The right management arrangement depends on the participant’s preference, desired control, administrative capacity and plan circumstances. A Support Coordinator can help make the service system understandable, but should not make the management decision for the participant.
