Support coordinator vs plan manager: what's the difference?

These two roles get confused constantly, partly because both are funded by your plan and both exist to make the NDIS easier. They do completely different jobs.

The short answer

A plan manager handles the money: they receive invoices from your providers, pay them from your plan, track your budgets and send you statements. A support coordinator handles the services: they help you understand the plan, find providers, get supports started and fix problems. Money versus organisation.

How each is funded

Plan management is funded in its own budget category, added to your plan on request at no cost to your other supports - in 2026-27 it's a set monthly fee paid to the plan manager. Support coordination is funded in the Capacity Building part of your plan, usually as a set number of dollars, and billed hourly as the work happens. Having one doesn't give you the other; many participants have both, some have neither.

A concrete example

Say your occupational therapist puts their fees up. Your plan manager's job is to check the new rate against the price limits and keep paying the invoices correctly. Your support coordinator's job is to talk it through with you: is the therapist still the right fit, is there capacity in the budget, are there alternatives worth comparing? Same event, two different responsibilities.

Which one do you need?

If invoices, receipts and budget tracking are the stressful part, plan management solves that, and you can ask for it at your next plan discussion. If the stressful part is that supports aren't happening - you don't know what the funding covers, providers aren't calling back, or everything is stuck on a waitlist - that's support coordination territory. If both sound familiar, that's common too, and the two roles work well together: the coordinator organises, the plan manager pays.

One thing they share

Both should be answerable to you. You can change plan managers and support coordinators whenever they stop earning their place in your plan, and neither of them gets a say in which providers you choose.

Need the services side sorted?

If the problem is supports not happening rather than invoices, that's what support coordination funding is for. TrueSide works with plan-managed and self-managed participants.
