Understanding NDIS transport funding

There are two different things

First, there’s the worker’s time supporting you to get somewhere (a community participation or self-care support). Second, there are the vehicle running costs - the kilometres. They’re funded and charged differently, which is where confusion usually starts.

Vehicle kilometres

Where it’s agreed in your service agreement, vehicle running costs are charged per kilometre - TrueSide charges $0.99/km (non-labour travel), in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements. Crucially: no written agreement, no charge. You should always know in advance.

Your transport budget

Some plans include a specific transport allowance for things like taxis or getting to work, separate from support worker time. The amount varies a lot between participants, so it’s worth checking exactly what yours says.

Door-to-door, not just a lift

Good transport support isn’t a taxi. It’s a familiar worker who helps you get ready, gets you there safely in a registered, insured vehicle, and stays with you if you need it - then gets you home.
