Interest-matched Support Work

NDIS support work for people who actually like gaming.

Support does not have to start with an activity you do not care about. Gaming and technology can be shared interests that make one-to-one support feel more natural, while your goals and choices stay in charge.

Shared interests can make support easier to engage with

Some people enjoy markets, cafés or organised groups. Others would much rather talk about a game, build something in Minecraft, play a co-op title, visit an arcade, browse a gaming store or go to a pop-culture event. There is no reason support work has to pretend those interests do not count.

TrueSide can use gaming and technology as participant-chosen interests within ordinary one-to-one Support Work and community participation. The activity is not the goal by itself: the point is support that fits the person well enough to help with the things that matter to them.

What gaming-based support might look like

  • Playing a game together as a comfortable starting point for a support session
  • Learning a new game, console or PC setup at the participant’s pace
  • Going to an arcade, gaming venue, hobby shop or pop-culture event
  • Using shared gaming interests as part of community access and social participation
  • Practising routines around appointments, transport or getting out of the house before or after a preferred activity
  • Talking through online safety, privacy and healthy boundaries around digital communities
  • Combining gaming with other interests such as gym, sport, food, technology or local outings

This is support work, not gaming therapy

TrueSide does not make clinical claims about gaming and does not present gaming as therapy, behaviour support or a treatment. It is simply one interest a participant may choose to build support around.

Interest-matched support

Gaming can be part of a bigger week.

A good match is about the person, not forcing every session into the same template.

Gaming

At home or out

Console, PC, tabletop, arcades or gaming venues — the participant chooses what they enjoy and what feels comfortable.

Community

Use interests to get out

A shared interest can make a community outing feel less arbitrary: gaming stores, events, cafés, arcades or another participant-chosen destination.

Consistency

Same worker, less explaining

TrueSide’s support-work model prioritises one consistent worker, so you do not have to restart the relationship and explain your interests every shift.

Technology

Digital confidence

Everyday device help, apps, online communication, accessibility settings and patient digital-skills practice.

Gym & sport

Not just gaming

If gym, football, basketball, swimming or another activity is more your thing, support can be built around those interests too.

Participation

Community support

Appointments, hobbies, sport, family events and community activities remain available whether gaming is part of the week or not.

What the support charge does — and doesn’t — cover.

Does the NDIS pay for games, consoles or subscriptions?

Do not assume it does. TrueSide’s service is the support worker’s time where the support fits the participant’s plan and current NDIS rules. Ordinary entertainment costs, consoles, games, subscriptions, event tickets, food and similar everyday expenses remain the participant’s responsibility unless there is a separate, valid funding basis.

Can a support worker go to the gym or sport with me?

Potentially, where the support worker assistance is disability-related, aligned with the participant’s goals and supported by the plan. Ordinary gym memberships, registration fees and other costs everyone pays are generally separate from the support-worker charge.

Do I have to be highly social?

No. Support can start wherever the participant is comfortable. The purpose is not to force group activities; it is to provide participant-led support that can gradually build confidence or participation where that is a goal.

Is this only for younger participants or autism?

No. The service is not diagnosis-specific and is not restricted to an age group. Fit depends on the participant’s preferences, support needs, plan and whether TrueSide has appropriate capacity.

NDIS guidance supports participant-chosen interests

The NDIS says support workers can help participants develop skills and work towards goals, including community participation. It also says Capacity Building supports can help people find and join activities that interest them, including sport or outdoor recreation. The exact funded support still depends on the participant’s plan and current rules.
